Participation in the MARGA Online Competition

as part of the Graduate Program of SCHOTT AG

As part of our Graduate Program at SCHOTT AG, we had the opportunity to participate in the MARGA Online Competition 2024/2025. Our team consisted of four motivated members from different locations in Germany.

Test round: First experiences and strategies

In the rest round we got to know and understand the influencing paramentes and their extremes as well as the online tool. This phase enabled us to gain valuable experiences and develop an initial strategy for the main round.  One of the main focuses was on ensuring the liquidity of our company, as we had to deal with a number of balancing loans in the test round.

Main round: Challenges and successes

Planning the individual periods in the main and final rounds was made more difficult by the different time zones, as two of our team members were in Asia. Despite this challenge, we got off to a very good start in the main round. We were able to successfully implement our strategy in the first period.

Our team had to develop business strategies and implement them in realistic scenarios. his encouraged our strategic thinking and decision-making, which was made more difficult by the uncertainty of the market. By adapting our strategy in time to our competitors’ behavior and market changes, we were able to secure a place in the final round.

Final round: Difficulties at the start and a race to catch up

The first round of the final round did not go as we had hoped, which presented us with some challenges in the following periods. Despite these difficulties, we managed to start a race to catch up. We were able to start this by making targeted, strategic decisions (e.g. purchasing additional goods and focusing on the production of other goods). In the end, we only just missed out on second place, but were able to celebrate an excellent third place.

Conclusion: Practical application and teamwork skills

The MARGA Business Simulation offered us a great opportunity to put our newly acquired theoretical knowledge into practice and develop entrepreneurial skills. We participants benefited from realistic scenarios that allowed us to test our management skills.

We were also able to make risky decisions without having to fear their consequences in the real world. The “MARGA” project strengthened the cooperation and cohesion of our team and gave us the opportunity to gain new experiences and insights together.
